Claiming Your Parcel at Customs (CMEC) + TIPS

By Jerica M - 9:39 PM

I'll give you tips and see the step-by-step procedure on how to claim your parcel at Customs (CMEC) below:

CUSTOMS. When you heard that word you'll really get scared. I was scared too when I tracked my GMarket (http://global.gmarket.co.kr/Home/Main) package and saw it was held at the customs since October 22, 2015, almost two weeks! At that moment, you can't help but think about the taxes you'll gonna pay. I swear, the whole two weeks, I've been worrying about that and I have read a lot of dreadful stories!

I called EMS Office (02 854-3580, the only landline that I was able to call) two times already about the package and they told me it was held at the customs but once cleared, it will be forwarded at our post office. So I waited for it to be cleared, after some days the status didn't change.

So I decided to emailed them at ems.cs@phlpost.gov.ph but I still got the same answer just like when I called them. But they indicated that it was not intended for delivery because they found out it contains taxable items. Moreover, they told me where I can claim the package, what time and what to bring.

And that made me visit Bureau of Customs Office (CMEC - Central Mail Exchange Center) to get the package, I realized waiting for it to be cleared was just a waste of time.

Bureau of Customs Office is located along CMEC Domestic Road, Pasay City. Open on Mondays to Fridays, 8 AM - 5PM

What to bring:
- 2 valid IDs with photocopy (it was specified in the email but when I was there, they didn't took the photocopy, just my ID)
- Notice Card from your Post Office (if none, fill out a form in Window 1, make sure you know your tracking number!!)

Step-by-step procedure:
1. Go to Window 1 - Give your notice card and you'll be given a number. Just wait for your number to be called.
If you don't have a notice card just like me when I went there. There are forms in Window 1 to be filled out with Receiver's Name, Address and Tracking Number. Just wait to be called and you'll be given a notice card. At the back of notice card, make sure you have your printed name and signature.

2. You'll be asked to go to the area near Window 2 where the inspection happens, it is where they will open the package and they will ask the value of your items after that, wait again as they will compute the overall taxes you'll gonna pay.

3. Wait for their call and they will give you a piece of paper that indicated the taxes to be paid. You'll be asked to go to the room next to Window 2, it's an office and that is where you will give the paper to someone to do a receipt. After that, you can pay in the cashier. (From PHP 3,400, I paid PHP 2,718)

4. You will be asked to go to Window 2, give your receipt and you will sign in the record book and you have to pay PHP 112 for postal fee. And you can take home your package! :D

TIPS:
- Make sure you know your tracking number so that even though you don't have a notice card, you can just fill out a form.

- DO NOT TELL THE ACTUAL VALUE OF YOUR ITEMS! DO NOT BRING YOUR INVOICE!

- IF YOU WERE ASK FOR THE VALUE OF YOUR ITEMS, MAKE SURE TO LESSEN IT. JUST MAKE YOUR OWN (LIKE WHAT I DID, I think they don't trust the declared value on the box, but if they ask you how much you paid, follow what I said)

- AT STEP 3, make sure to ask for a discount! Make sure to ask for a discount before they actually make your receipt. (From PHP 3,400 to PHP 2,718 for me!)

That's it! I was really nervous at that time because I thought the people in Customs were not that nice (well according to other blogs or stories I have read), they all looked so friendly and they even smiled at me. I guess it depends on other people's experiences but don't be afraid. :D
